This article by Alexander Dallas Bache (1806-1867) was read before the Society on April 2, 1836. Bache was the great-grandson of Benjamin Franklin and the grandson of Secretary of the Treasury Alexander Dallas. He taught engineering at West Point; served in the United States Army Corps of Engineers; taught natural philosophy and chemistry at the University of Pennsylvania from 1827 to 1843; and served as the first president of Central High School of Philadelphia, from 1839 to 1842. In 1843 he became superintendent of the United States Coast Survey, a position he held until his death.
