About this Item

Very lightly marked ex-library (consisting of the lovely copper-plate engraved bookplate of the Mark Skinner Library by Edward Davis French, plus a faint withdrawn stamp and a 19th century card pocket, no external markings) with shelf wear to tips, corners and edges of book, no jacket as issued. This book, first published in England and France in 1872 results from a stay in England at the invitation of Oxford University following the publication of Taine's History of English Literature in 1867. He gave a course on French literature and was awarded a D.C.L. degree by the University. From Wikipedia: "Hippolyte Adolphe Taine (1828 1893) was a French critic and historian. He was the chief theoretical influence of French naturalism, a major proponent of sociological positivism and one of the first practitioners of historicist criticism. Literary historicism as a critical movement has been said to originate with him. Taine is particularly remembered for his three-pronged approach to the contextual study of a work of art, based on the aspects of what he called "race, milieu, and moment".Taine had a profound effect on French literature; the 1911 Encyclopædia Britannica asserted that "the tone which pervades the works of Zola, Bourget and Maupassant can be immediately attributed to the influence we call Taine's." Most items ship with free delivery confirmation, electronic tracking and jacket protectors (generally over $10.00) if applicable. Clean recycled packing material will be used when possible.
