About this Item

Full leather. cix, 784 pp. Some spotting, title and author slip missing, some separation along one spine edge (still holding firmly), signed by William Eno (Jan. 1 1840) and Jonathan Holdeen (O 19 1936), dampstaining along bottom edges, two leaves starting to pull loose and protruding slightly, some foxing and few notations, notations on rear blanks, Good Minus. Jonathan Holdeen (1881-1967), who resided in Pine Plains and had an office in Poughkeepsie, N.Y., was the eccentric, penny-pinching, millionaire lawyer who set up 2.8 million dollars in trusts to make Pennsylvania a tax-free state (an idea inspired by Benjamin Franklin). An extraordinary legal clash followed in which the Unitarian Universalists were involved. Google Holdeen, and read about this fascinating scheme and legal battle. Bookseller Inventory # 018932
