About this Item

Small 8vo. xii, 13-403 pp. Modern black cloth, silver-stamped spine, original (smaller) front cover retained and mounted on new binding, as well as original pastedowns and end-leaves tipped-in within; pastedowns slightly torn and repaired, small closed title-page tear, else near fine. SCARCE. First American edition; issued in London 1858. This is an important text for the period of the American Civil War, as it prominently deals with gunshot wounds. In 1862, A. N. Talley, president of the Confederate Army's medical board, arranged to have Macleod's book reprinted because he considered it to be "the highest recent authority to which reference could be had" (Greenblatt 302)." MacLeod's Notes articulated with uncommon eloquence the state of the art in the treatment of head injury after the Napoleonic Wars, the Crimean War, and the introduction of chloroform, and just before the introduction of Listerian surgery" (Greenblatt 303).
