Apparently an early but not first edition -- Carnegie first had these published for distribution to friends in 1879; this copy too notes "(Private Circulation.)" on the title page. Carnegie (1835-1919), the Scottish-born American steel magnate and philanthropist who devoted his last years to distributing his fortune for the benefit of society, boldly and handsomely inscribes and signs (with title, not name) the title page in his usual brown ink: "CH. Mellen Esqr. / with the Compliments of / The Author." Mellen was an Iowa official with the Chicago, Burlington & Quincy Railroad. (Mellen signs the front flyleaf large and bold in pencil, adding "Keokuk / Iowa / Feb 5th 1885" -- but on the dark brown endpaper it's barely visible. Bookseller Inventory # 28178
