About this Item

With 116 text figures. Modern calf-backed marbled boards, new endpapers. An excellent copy of a rare book. First edition of the first textbook on submarine mining published in England. The book, according to the preface, was "compiled from the various papers which have been drawn up, and experiments which have been made during the last three or four years, in the course of instruction carried on at the School of Military Engineering, Chatham." The author defines and makes a distinction between a submarine mine and a torpedo, emphasizing the offensive and defensive nature of each weapon. He proceeds to detail various types of explosives, including the best type to use depending upon the location (deep sea, inlets, lakes, etc.), and how to construct the various types of mines. Of particular importance are the means of mooring and ways to ignite mines (of which there are substantial and many ways to do so). Testing, which apparently is quite important in the manufacture and ultimate use of weaponry such as submarine mines, of everything from electrical cables to batteries is detailed. The mines discussed herein are not only offensive and defensive weapons placed by submarines or other boats, but include explosive devices set by individuals to protect entrances to harbors and other waterways.Stotherd (1828-1895) was a major-general of the Royal Engineers and director-general of the ordnance survey of the United Kingdom. During the American Civil War, he was in Canada as assistant to the Commanding Engineer. Upon his return, he became an instructor at Chatham in electricity, chemistry and photography, working on the application of electricity to mining, to a great extent the basis of this book.
