About this Item

Complete with half-title, errata slip inserted following the list of contents. Half morocco over marbled boards; an excellent copy from the library of Arnold Thackray with his bookplate. First edition. Thomson had edited the second edition of Clerk Maxwell's great treatise on electricity and magnetism, and he felt that it would have disfigured the text to have overloaded it with long footnotes. He therefore decided to publish this supplementary volume further explaining Clerk Maxwell's work. It is here that Thomson details the progress that had been made in the twenty years since the publication of Clerk Maxwell's famous treatise. It contains chapters on Faraday tubes of force, which led to the discovery that a beam of light carries momentum. He further treats the discharge of electricity through gases, the first comprehensive account in the English language, and the predecessor of his full-length book on the subject printed in 1903.Thomson (1856-1940) was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1906 for his discovery of the electron and research on the conduction of electricity through gases. He also carried out significant investigation on the structure of atoms and developed a model of atomic structure which was important to theoretical physics until it was replaced by the Rutherford model in 1913.
