About this Item

Huastec is the northernmost dialect of the Maya language. In the 17th and 18th centuries it was spoken in Puebla, Veracruz, and San Luis Potos? Works of any category in this language are rare, this being the first grammar and the first dictionary. Tapia Zenteno was not only an important Mexican linguist and professor of Mexican languages at the Royal and Pontifical University, but was also a comisario for the Inquisition. This work of his is dedicated to Archbishop Francisco Antonio Lorenzana, a man deeply interested in the indigenous culture and the conquest of it, and the man who produced Cort?s's letters in a fine and wonderfully illustrated edition in Mexico in 1770. A substantial fragment of this important linguistic work with a distinguished provenance. See below for what is missing. Provenance: Gift inscription in lower margin of p. 88 from Jos? Mar?a Andrade to Antonio Pe?afiel dated 18 November 1885; bookplate of Nicolas Le?n; sold to the John Carter Brown Library in 1909; deaccessioned 2008. Small JCB stamps in lower margin of p. 88. 4to (20 cm, 7.785"). [2 of 5] ff., 84 of 128 pp. Vi?aza 355; Garc?a Icazbalceta, Apuntes, 73; Medina, Mexico, 5187; Sabin 94355; Palau 327486; Maggs, Bibl. Amer., 4678. Late-19th-century quarter Mexican green sheep with mottled paper sides. Incomplete copy: lacks title-page, 2 pages of preliminaries ("Dedicatoria ? don Francisco Antonio de Lorenzana" and "Al estudiante aplicado"), pp. 59?62 (in the dictionary portion), and pp. 89?128 (the catechism). Complete copies are now very expensive. Bookseller Inventory # 28248
