He was born and lived in Kovel (first in the Russian Empire and then in Poland), where he married Ida, daughter of Rabbi Eliezer Nitzberg. Gutenbaum led a modest and ascetic life. Retired from the public and worked diligently on his work day and night. He published poems, notes and drawings and wrote philosophy and science books in Yiddish. In one of his books Gutenbaum analyzed the Arthur Schopenhauer philosophy in depth and yet plainly and clearly. In another book he studied in depth the meaning of Albert Einstein's theory of relativity. In 1936, he moved to Vilnius (then Poland). Gutenbaum was a Zionist in his view. He tried to obtain a University teaching position in Eretz Israel but since he was an autodidact, was unsuccessful. He had friendly relations with many scholars from around the world. He had a masterly of Russian, English, French and German, conducted extensive correspondence with the Jewish physicists Albert Einstein and Albert Abraham Michelson. He began publishing lists and drawings in the daily "Vilner Tag" edited by Zalman Reizin. Worked on a book in which he developed an original philosophical method, but did not survive long enough to complete it. He had great reservations about communism and the limitation of thought in the Soviet Union that Vilna was annexed to in 1939. With the outbreak of the war between the Soviet Union and Germany, he had no choice in Vilna. In the early days of the German occupation he was taken from his home and was shot to death in Ponary. His wife and their only daughter, Mosia both perished in the Vilna ghetto. Seller Inventory # 010244
