Synopsis: This volume comprises eight essential texts that describe the situation of the Nuevo Reino de Leon during the eighteenth century. All texts are written by leading characters, all familiar with the realities of the province and contemporary to the circumstances that they describe; among them, four governors, a captain, a commander, a former major, and even a viceroy of New Spain. These are, in all cases, official documents such as consultations, descriptions, and news reports whose final recipients were the highest government authorities of the viceregal and the Spanish monarchy. The included texts are extremely rich in details as they were addressed to officials so geographically distant from the territory that they were the only way in which they could know the province, and they would serve as the background to make decisions and adopt policies that deeply affected not only the lives of its authorities, but the whole fate of the region.
