Book Description New York, 1872. No Binding. Condition: Fine. Daniel Giraud Elliot (1835-1915) was an American zoologist and a founding member of the American Museum of Natural History in New York and the American Ornithologists’ Union. Elliot was a noted figure in the nineteenth century scientific community for his talent as an artist and his collection of ornithological specimens, thought to be the of the finest in private collection. Elliot traveled throughout Europe and Asia studying and collecting. Through his own financing, Elliot was able to produce numerous comprehensive color-plate books on birds and mammals, without having to concede size or quality. Considered the highest achievement of Elliot’s career, he published two volumes of A Monograph of the Phasianidae from 1870-1872. The monograph was issued in six parts and contains over 80 extraordinarily detailed and beautiful plates. The superb plates from Daniel Giraud Elliot’s A Monograph of the Phasianidae or Family of Pheasants display the outstanding attention to detail and skill of the author as well as the artists Joseph Wolf, Joseph Smith and John Gerrard Keulemans who worked with Elliot on many of the prints. This lithograph, Numida Verreauxii, 23” x 19”, is in excellent condition. Expertly hand colored, the pheasant stands regally in shades of blue with precise patterns the length of the feathers, against the background landscape of its natural habitat.
