About this Item

"This is the first biography of Princess Clotide Maria Teresa Luisa, a key figure in the alliance between the House of Savoy and Emperor Napoleon II which led to the reunification of the Italian States under an Italian King. The daughter of Victor Emmanuel II, Princess Clotide was married at the age of fifteen to Prince Jerome Napoleon Bonaparte, a sophisticate and freethinker who was at that time thirty-six years old. As the title of this book suggests, this marriage was not Clotide's desire, but opne arranged for reasons of state by the wily Prime Minister Cavour. After acceding to her father's wishes in this matter, the young princess played an important and dignified role at the sumptuous court of Napoleon and Empress Eugenie during the height of the Second Empire. At the same time her beauty, character, and good works made her so popular with ther French people that when the Empire fell she refused to resort to any subterfuge and left Paris in an open carriage in full view of a sympathetic public." This book has 312 pages and is illustrated. Bookseller Inventory # 060835
