Original etching with watercolor of historic downtown streetscape of St. Augustine with artist's handwritten title and signature in pencil at bottom; image is undated but frame and paper appear to be circa 1950s to 1960s. Image foreground of house-lined street narrowing to background of small wagon or car and one white cloud in a blue sky; houses are adorned with flowering plants but with only two figures, one in a street-level doorway with the second figure immediately above leaning on a porch railing. Image dimensions: H 8.25cm x L 12.5cm on an off-white sheet. Undecorated tan wood frame, dimensions H 22cm x 27cm, with wire hanger; backing cardboard present but backing paper has been removed. Born in Chicago, Edith Walker Oliver (1889-1979) moved to St. Augustine upon marrying her husband in 1935. She promptly became an active member of the Arts Club of St. Augustine (renamed in 1948 as the St. Augustine Art Association) and developed her preferred medium of hand-colored etchings of historic structures and streetscapes in and around St. Augustine. Oliver's artistic production lasted from 1930s through the 1960s which coincided with the Art Association's most successful years in attracting northern artists to St. Augustine on wintertime sojourns. Among the most prominent painters in this clique were Lena May Newcastle, Louis Charles Vogt, Elisabeth Boardman Warren, Tod Lindenmuth, Blanche Lazzell, Anthony Thieme, and Emmett Fritz. Their stylistically diverse works reflect the historical charm and sunny light of the Florida coastal town. Examples of their paintings along with several by Edith Oliver were featured in an October 2001-January 2002 sixty-painting exhibit titled "Lost Colony; Artists of Saint Augustine 1930-1950" organized by St. Augustine's Lightner Museum. Please note that the hand-colored etching has not been examined outside the frame and most certainly should be re-framed for its current presentation is probably not acid-free.
