Frontispiece halftone photo [probably of Sally Pleasants and her little daughter Lucy Lee]. Blue cloth stamped in gilt on both the front cover and the spine, with a cover vignette of candlesticks and entwining roses in the Arts & Crafts Style. Fore- and bottom edges untrimmed. Very minor wear to extremities with nothing rubbed through, spine gilt ever so slightly dulled, cover gilt bright, else very good to near fine. Sally Lee McCarty Pleasants was born at Cedar Grove Plantation, Fairfax County, Virginia on January 8, 1833. She was the daughter of John Mason McCarty and Ann Lucinda Lee. She married Frederick William Pleasants at Richmond, Virginia, on November 22, 1855 and died April, 1916 at Menasha, Wisconsin at age 83. Lucy Lee Pleasants was the first child of Sally and Frederick. Born in 1856, Lucy wrote OLD VIRGINIA DAYS AND WAYS: REMINISCENCES OF SALLY MCCARTY PLEASANTS in 1918. She died in 1925. Lucy Lee Pleasants was the driving force behind the establishment of the Menasha, Wisconsin free public library in 1896 and became its first librarian, a position she held until her retirement in 1919. Pleasants was very active in professional library groups as well as women's clubs. Some of her comments on being a librarian can be found in LIBRARY WORK WITH CHILDREN by Alice Hazeltine. She was a published poet with her long poem "Plutarch's Lives." Lucy Pleasants was the sister-in-law of George Banta, the publisher of this volume of reminiscences of Sally McCarty Pleasants, which describe antebellum life in northern Virginia.
