1st Printing. 95 pages. Published in 2000. The photographer's breakthrough third collection. One of the most erotic photography titles of our time. The first appearance of the title in the United States. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions. Published in a small and limited first print run as a hardcover original only that sold out shortly after publication. The First Edition is now scarce. A brilliant production by Tony Ward: Regular-sized volume format. Pictorial hard boards with titles on the cover and spine, as issued. Photographs by Tony Ward. Brief text by Bob Guccione. Printed on pristine-white, thick coated stock paper in the United States to the highest standards. Without DJ, as issued. Presents Tony Ward's "Orgasm". His breakthrough collection. A "push-the-envelope" exploration of the sex act as a creative act, a series of acrobatics inspired by the imagination and recorded on film by the artist. At a glance, Tony Ward would seem to be the American Helmut Newton (with "hommage" touches to both Pierre Molinier and Robert Mapplethorpe). His debt to these great artist/photographers of sex is considerable and unmistakable. Newton's darkest sexual fantasies were mediated by a refinement of sensibility and style that Ward finds effete because he pushes the same fetishistic and sadomasochistic imagery to its farthest limits. "Ward's images are aggressive. Proudly sinister, digging at the viewer, confronting them with their preconceptions about what it means to be a sexual human being. Not just pornographic, but makes one think about pornography" (A. D. Coleman). The collection ends with what is surely one of the most daring photographs ever taken: A self-portrait of the photographer engaged in anal sex with one of his models. Ward published a follow-up in color called "Orgasm XL" (2003), which is bigger but not better. An absolute "must-have" title for Tony Ward collectors. This title is a contemporary erotic art photography classic. This is one of very few copies of the First American Edition/First Printing still available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, a pristine beauty. Please note: Almost all other copies available online have serious flaws because they have been pored over repeatedly. A scarce copy thus. 95 duotone plates. One of the most brilliant photographers of the sex act. A fine copy. ISBN 0867195010. Bookseller Inventory # 19247

About this title:

Synopsis:

After the much acclaimed Obsessions, Tony Ward offers here a collection of photos that reinforce his position as one of the main photographers of sex. The artist's very open and direct approach to sexual matter has given his images a beauty and a liberating effect that remain in your memory long after you have seen them.

About the Author: Tony Ward's photographic imagery unites his primal love, erotic art, with his perennial passions for fashion, design and portraiture. Ward began his professional career as a corporate photographer for pharmaceutical giant SMITHKLINE CORPORATION (GLAXO SMITHKLINE) in 1980. In 1984, Ward opened a large photographic studio that serviced a variety of Fortune 500 companies. He achieved global notoriety for his first published book on erotic photography, the controversial and highly praised OBSESSIONS (Editions Stemmle, Zurich, 1998). OBSESSIONS was followed by four more challenging, innovative and critically acclaimed volumes: ORGASM (Alixe, Paris, 2000), TABLEAUX VIVANTS (Stemmle,Zurich, 2002), ORGASM XL (Alixe, Paris, 2002) and BEST OF EROTICA (6 X 6.com., Berlin, 2005). Critical thinkers on photography such as A.D. Coleman, Rick Wester and Reinhold Misselbeck, have written illuminating essays that accompany these editions. Ward's fine art is widely collected, exhibited and syndicated around the world. His search for new subjects and clients necessitates constant worldwide travel. Ward makes his home and studio in the historic heart of Philadelphia, but his unending quest for inspiring imagery and new commercial assignment opportunities compels him to divide his creative time between diverse cosmopolitan centers from Los Angeles, Miami, New York, London and Paris, with extensive layovers in Hamburg and Amsterdam. Ward's graphic mediations on his favorite themes, fashion, portraiture and the use of sex in media, are both groundbreaking and accessible. Editorials about TW and his work have been published in numerous international popular culture magazines, books and television, such as STERN, MAX,PLAYBOY TV, PENTHOUSE, RTL TV GERMANY, TVA TELEVISION AMSTERDAM, GQ, PARK AVENUE, LOADED, VIBE, MEN'S HEALTH as well as avant-garde Dutch magazines, BLEND, BLVD and LINK. He also shoots fashion for NEIMAN MARCUS.
