William Osborn Stoddard, 1835-1925, was journalist born in NY, coeditor of Central Illinois Gazette, private secretary to Lincoln, US marshall of Arkanasa and author of many books. Apparently Mr. Scott, of Boonton New Jersey, has asked Stoddard questions about writing (What is the mission of a novel? What is my consciousness in writing? My strongest work? my favorite?; Method of work?). In this letter, Stoddard gives his answers to these questions. High quality letter in terms of content.
