About this Item

Tenniel, John ["Carroll, Lewis" aka Charles L. Dodgson). AN ORIGINAL WATERCOLOUR OF JOHN TENNIEL'S FAMOUS "THE MAD HATTER RUNNING (WITH TEACUP AND TOAST)" An original Tenniel image, taken directly from the woodblock in the British Museum and hand colored by artist Francine Black for Macmillan, signed and dated November 1993 directly below. Image size approx. 4.5" x 4.5". The original Tenniel drawings were of course uncolored; however Macmillan commissioned Francine Black in 1993 to hand color a small number of these images for a promotional campaign. It seems remarkable to us that Macmillan received permission to take this imprint directly from the original woodblocks held in the British Museum, which had been engraved by the Dalziel brothers from the drawings Tenniel had done for the first editions of Lewis Carroll's books, yet it's true. It's been years since we've seen one of these charming little paintings and this particular illustration from Chapter 11 (Who Stole The Tarts?) is both one of the very best known. An uncommon opportunity to acquire GENUINELY RELATED ARTWORK from the great Tenniel/Dalziel British Museum archive (as opposed to the millions of items created for the "Alice Industry." In Fine condition. Bookseller Inventory # 001849
