About this Item

Woolf, Virginia. ORLANDO. A Biography. Presentation Light Green Paper Copy. New York: Crosby Gaige, 1928. One of only 11 or 15 copies according to the publisher of the elegant green paper copy, from the published edition of 861 copies total of which 800 are both numbered and signed. This copy is the one noted in the bibliography; Presented by Crosbie Gaige, the publisher to Austin Keough: "Dear Austin - This copy of Orlando is one of an edition of 15 copies printed on green paper for your especial edification. There is only one copy of the first edition of Austin Keough though on green paper or otherwise, so guard it well for the benefit of those friends who love you, I count myself among them. / Crosbie Guage". Another mention of a copy for Randall of Scribner's, Crosbie Gaige states that there we're only 11 green paper copies. Gilt decorated & lettered black morocco spine over marbled paper covered boards in the publisher's original slipcase. This is a fine copy with a bit of rubbing to the marbled tips. A remarkable, elegant production: colophon numbered but unsigned, printed on pure rag green paper, elegant typography design by Frederic Warde. Woolf's amazing fictitious history of four centuries of transgender "biography" about a mythical being named Orlando who starts life as an Elizabethan nobleman and transforms into a woman poet of vast social insight. Written for & inspired by Woolf's friend, & lover [possibly], Vita Sackville-West, to whom the book was dedicated. Considering her time, an extraordinarily courageous achievement in English letters & fantastic literature. Basis for the splendid Sally Potter 1993 film starring Tilda Swinton, Billy Zane et al.
