About this Item

Thomas Otway. THE ORPHAN: OR, THE UNHAPPY-MARRIAGE: A TRAGEDY, AS IT IS ACTED AT HIS ROYAL HIGHNESS THE DUKE’S THEATRE. London: Printed for R. Bentley, and Mr. Magnes, in Russel-Street in Covent-Garden, 1680. The scarce first edition of this important Restoration drama quarto. In a 19th-century quarter leather board binding, covered with decorated paper. A1 title page; A1b blank; A2-A3a Otway's dedication to Her Royal Highness the Dutchess; A3b blank (with difficult to decipher previous owner's contemporary line in ink); A4 List of "The Persons Represented in the Tragedy" together with the names of the actors in the original performance, including Mr. Betterton as Castalio and Mrs. Barry as Monimia; A4b Prologue; B4-K4, pages 1-71 of the text, with K4b (unnumbered) as Epilogue. In very good condition for the rare and important drama quarto, except for the last quire, K1-K4. K1-K3 are present, but mounted and in fair condition only, with apparent childish scribbling along the margins. Unfortunately, K4 with the last page of the text (recto) and the Epilogue (verso) is missing but there is a recent leaf tipped in that contains the complete missing text. More detail can be had on request. A former owner's name, written: J. Anne Baillie (in two places) is found on C1. We believe this to be Joanna Baillie, the noted playwright, poet, essayist, and critic (1762-1851) She greatly admired Otway's tragedies in her critical writings on the Engish stage.
