Synopsis: Package this access card with your textbook to give your students' access to OWL, the #1 online homework and tutorial system for chemistry. With OWL, you'll save time and help your students improve their grades. Developed by chemistry instructors for teaching chemistry, OWL includes powerful course management tools that make homework management a breeze, as well as advanced reporting and grade book features that save you time in grading homework and tracking student progress. With OWL, you can address your students' different learning styles through a wide range of assignment types, including tutorials, simulations, visualization exercises, and algorithmically generated homework questions with instant answer-specific feedback. OWL is the only system designed to support mastery learning, allowing students to work at their own pace until they understand each concept and skill. Each time a student tries a problem, OWL changes the chemicals and wording of the question, as well as the numbers, to ensure student mastery. OWL's multimedia eBook is integrated with each text's mastery exercises and includes links to rich interactive assets which may include self-check quizzes, video solutions or examples, active figures and animations, and more. OWL includes more parameterized end-of-chapter questions and Student Self Assessment questions, encouraging students to practice multiple questions of the same type with different chemicals, wording, and numbers to ensure their mastery of the underlying chemical concepts. After registering in OWL, students may upgrade their OWL access to include an e-version of the Student Solutions Manual. Visit www.cengage.com/owl to learn more.
About the Author:
William L. Masterton received his PhD in physical chemistry from the University of Illinois in 1953. Two years later he began to work at the University of Connecticut, where he taught general chemistry and a graduate course in chemical thermodynamics. He has received numerous teaching awards, including an award from the Student Senate at the University of Connecticut, of which he was most proud. Dr. Masterton is co-author of the all-time best-selling general chemistry textbook CHEMICAL PRINCIPLES, which has sold well over 1.5 million copies. Dr. Masterton's field of research, solution thermodynamics, prepared him well for making maple syrup each March at the family farmhouse in New Hampshire.
Cecile Nespral Hurley received her MS at the University of California, Los Angeles. Since 1979, she has served as Lecturer and Coordinator of Freshman Chemistry at the University of Connecticut, where she directed a groundbreaking National Science Foundation-supported project on cooperative learning in general chemistry. She is one of a prestigious group of University Teaching Fellows who are selected by their fellow faculty members as models of teaching excellence and dedication. In addition, she coordinates the High School Cooperative Program in Chemistry through which superior Connecticut high school students take the university's general chemistry course at their schools. In her spare time, Professor Hurley roots for the University of Connecticut women's basketball Huskies--and roots out weeds from her country garden, which she likes to imagine rivals Monet's at Giverny.
