Bound in full, black morocco leather, over beveled boards, with spine gold-lettered: Lincoln Obsequies, with gilt line & urn design, and printer s name gilt at base of spine: E. Jones & Co.; front cover with gilt titling with larger gilt urn design, and the recipient's and former owner s name gold-stamped below: [General] Martin T. McMahon. (see scan); blindstamped borders around covers, with gilt design from front cover, repeated on the back cover, all edges gilt, with dark brown coated paper endpapers, with the Valentine letter mounted, by being pasted along the top-edge onto the front paste-down, and penciled notation on reverse of facing coated endpaper: Pres. Copy to Gen. McMahon from David T. Valentine, with letter. The leather at both spine ends has chipped away, with some wear to cover corners, edges, scratches to surface of leather on spine, covers, a 3 inch split to the back outer hinge (leather) along the spine, from the bottom, and a partial crack to the front outer hinge leather along the spine from the top. The plates have not been tanned from the tissue guards; interior, generally is clean, and without creased pages. Text of the letter; on an engraved sheet of 5 in. x 8 in. stationary, headed: Office of Clerk of Common Council No. 8 City-Hall New York 186- Dear Sir The accompanying Volume is respectfully Presented for your acceptance [signed] D T. Valentine Clerk of Common Council General M. T. McMahon, was born in Canada in 1838, he served throughout the Civil War, and was in all the major battles of the Army of the Potomac; he was also an attorney, and later U.S. Minister to Paraguay.
