About this Item

A Second Impression of Dunne's pseudonymously-published book of humorous socio-political commentary. Bound in cloth with gilt lettering and pictorial decoration. Bears an inscription in ink on the front free endpaper. With two pages of advertisements for other 'Mr. Dooley' titles, and thirty-two pages of advertisements for various William Heinemann books. Finley Peter Dunne (18671936) was a Chicago-based U. S. author, writer and humorist. His fictional alter ego, Mr. Dooley, expounded upon political and social issues of the day from his South Side Chicago Irish pub and he spoke with the thick verbiage and accent of an Irish immigrant from County Roscommon. Dunne's sly humour and political acumen won the support of President Theodore Roosevelt, a frequent target of Mr. Dooley's barbs. Indeed Dunne's sketches became so popular and such a litmus test of public opinion that they were read each week at White House cabinet meetings. Condition: The binding is generally tight and firm. There is only slight wear to the extremities, with just slight bumping andmarks to the boards. Internally the pages are bright with occasional spots throughout, becoming prominent to the first and last few pages. Overall the condition is very good. Bookseller Inventory # 016986
