About this Item

8vo. xxx, 458 pp. Modern brown cloth spine over original brown calf boards, gilt-ruled spine, original gilt-stamped spine label; re-backed, boards rubbed, corners showing. Inscribed by George Cabell Jr. and William B. Hare on front free endpaper, ink stamp of W. B. Hare (1812) on title-page. Very good. FIRST EDITION. This late 18th century medical text, in addition to its interesting contents, has the added associative bonus of having been owned by two notable physicians of the Federal Period, Dr. George Cabell Jr. and his brother-in-law, William B. Hare. Hare and Cabell were both prominent in political and social circles of their time, including their close friend William Wirt, Attorney General of the United States. Provenance: George Cabell Jr. (1774-1827). Born in Lynchburg, VA; received his M.D. from the University of Pennsylvania. Built the 'Bon Aire' mansion house, where he lived and practiced his profession with much success in the surrounding country, as well as in Lynchburg. He was in partnership with his brother-in-law, Dr. William B. Hare, for some years, until about 1804, when Dr. Hare moved from 'Warminster' to 'Harewood'?
