About this Item

From the title page : "With a Foreword By the Hon. William Howard Taft. And an Appendix Containing Extracts of Addresses By President McKinley, President Roosevelt, Judge Parker, Secretary Hay, Ex-Secretary Root, Secretary Taft and Governor Wright" . 416 pages; illustrations, map; index; bound in publisher's brown cloth with dark brown design on cover and spine, gilt lettering on cover and spine. Added "LALA EDITION" across the bottom of the cover in gilt. Gilt top edging to the pages. Inscribed in ink on the front flyleaf "To: - Hon B.B. Thayer, With sincere regards and best wishes, Dr Ramon Reyes Lala - of Manila, P.I. New York April 10th 1911." Dr. Lala was educated in Europe, later banished by the Spanish, and became the first naturalized Filipino-American citizen. His most famous work is THE PHILIPPINE ISLANDS (1899). Dr. Lala's lectures would cover the history of the Philippines, its religion and society, products, the battles of the Spanish-American War, along with the insurrection and American occupation. The "LALA EDITION" of Devin's book was always on hand when Lala would give his lectures on the Philippines so he would have a copy to inscribe to a person interested in his message. These copies are quite scarce. This book is a very good clean tight copy with Lala's full inscription. Bookseller Inventory # 10972
