8vo. viii, 616pp. 169-264pp. Black paper-covered boards. 11 early issues from Isaac Leeser's monthly periodical, one of the first Jewish journal published in the United States. Leeser was one of the founding figures of American Orthodox Judaism. He strongly opposed Reform Judaism and the efforts of Christian missionaries. Leeser is also notable for his proto-Zionist advocacy of Jewish settlement in Palestine. Volume 1 contains April 1843 through March 1844. Volume 1. No. 4-6 (July-September 1843) pp. 157-313 missing.
