About this Item

Pp. xxii, (2), 1-640; (4), 641-1245, (1); 16 color plates, protected by tissue guards, after paintings by Francis L. Jacques, 72 black-and-white photo-plates and maps, 80 text-figures. Publisher's original dark green cloth, lettered in gilt on the spine and front cover, and decorated in blind on the front cover, original green paper-covered slipcase, 4to. This first printing was issued in a limited edition of 1200 numbered copies, this being #325. One of the major ornithology monographs of the 20th century; this is still the most authoritative source on South American seabirds. Warmly inscribed by the author on the front endpaper: "Inscribed with enthusiasm for Alex M. Burgess by his friend Robert Cushman Murphy." Tipped on to front endpaper is a folded letter from the author, on American Museum of Natural History stationary, addressed to Carl L. Muller. The letter dated January 21, 1947, thanks Muller for his information on a godwit that he observed on Long Island. Murphy invites Muller to visit his office at the AMNH. A very bright and clean copy in fine (mint) condition in a very good original slipcase. Bookseller Inventory # 5463
