About this Item

Small 8vo, (16) pp. including a page of music, facing German and English texts, later vellum. First German translation of Elizabeth Carter's poem "Ode to Wisdom." The novelist Samuel Richardson saw the poem in manuscript, and printed it without permission in Clarissa (first edition, vol. II, Letter IX). Elizabeth Carter's remonstrance was the prelude to an acquaintance with him, and she sometimes joined his Òflower-garden of ladiesÓ at North End, ridiculed by Walpole as his "petticoaterie." (Cambridge History of English and American Literature, volume XI.ÊThe Period of the French Revolution, ch. XV.ÊThe Bluestockings.) The poem next appeared (with some small changes) in Elizabeth Carter's Poems on several occasions, 1762. The translator of this German version was Johan Peter Uz (1720-1796), German poet and translator of the odes of Anacreon. Exceedingly rare; we can locate only a copy at Harvard, and three in Germany. The Harvard catalogue describes the imprint as "false." Price and Price, The publication of English literature in Germany, p. 190 (under Richardson). Bookseller Inventory # 14991
