A translation of various odes by Pindar, including various Olympic odes, the Song of Orpheus, the Triumphs of the Goat, two Nemean odes, etc. Preceded by a lengthy discussion and history of the ancient Olympic Games in Greece, discussing the Hellanodicks (precursor to the Olympics), foot races, wrestling, the pentathlon, horse races, honors and awards, etc. GOOD condition. Leather cracked and split along the hinges, with the covers tenuously attached. Heavy scuffing to the leather, especially along the extremities, including sections peeled off exposing the boards beneath. Leather cracked and chipped along the spine, with some residue of leather present when handled. Owners' signatures present. Text block clean and solid.
