About this title

Synopsis:

The Odyssey of the Blue Swan is a wonderful and often humorous story about building the long canal system that we know of which began at Lake Erie in New York, continued in Ohio and Indiana. The story takes place in the area of Marysville, Ohio. Some of the characters are based on Mr. Carder's Current family connection. We learn about the characters that traveled the canal, as well as the characters of the community of New Bremen. Alwyn Carder has caught the very essence and soul of the canal period in the United States.

About the Author:

Alwyn A. Carder was born and raised at the Carder family homestead, Hatfield, in Jay County, Indiana. He graduated from Redkey High School and Indiana University, Bloomington. He served in the U. S. Navy during W. W. II and was in the Naval Reserves for several years. Mr. Carder taught at Indiana University, Markle High School, Shortridge High School, and Union City High School in Indiana. He wrote plays for his students to perform, and he was instrumental in encouraging his students to continue their educations after high school. Alwyn A. Carder spent considerable time researching the canal systems in the United States, and has written about the people who built them, and the characters who used the canals for transportation and trade.
