Prosper Mérimée (1803-1870) was a French playwright, historian, archaeologist, and short story writer, perhaps best known for his novella Carmen, which was the basis of Bizet's opera of that name (Wikipedia). This collection of his works, a new and corrected edition, includes the title story, La Vénus d'Ille, Les Ames du pugatoire, Mateo Falcone, Vision de Charles XI, L'Enlèvement de la redoute, Tamango, La Perle de Tolèdo, La Partie de trictrac, La Vase éstrusque, Les Mécontents, and Letters adressees d'Espagne au directeur de la Revue de Paris. Octavo (7" x 4 1/2"); half-leather spine with gilt titles and decorations (the half-inch area on either side of the spine may have been redone, taped or painted or something); marbled paper over boards; the paper is seriously rubbed and a piece has been torn off the back cover; the edges of the boards are quite worn; nice floral endpapers. The interior is good with some very light browning and occasional light foxing. Name plate of a former owner is pasted inside the front cover and the first free endpaper is embossed with his address.
