About this Item

This seven volume set belonged to Saunders Mac Lane, whose ownership signature appears on the title page of volumes I and IV,2. The title pages of III, 1 and IV, 1 are clean. The other five volumes are marked up as though they were galley proofs or library cataloguing marks. Indeed volumes I, II, 1 and 2, and III, 2 have stamps that would appear to be library acquisition numbers; and Vol. IV, 2 has such a number written in hand. The markings on the title pages are most likely library related but these are not ex libris copies. I describe each volume. Volume I (2 parts, bound together): The lower right hand corner has turned up front wrap and pages to page 141; the spine is a bit wornand has a slight tear at the base front; the spine is uncreased. Volume 2 (in two parts, 2 volumes): in both volumes the cellophane cover is flaking off; both are unmarked; both have some wear along the crown and base of the spine and at the four corners; Volume III (2 parts, 2 volumes): again in both cases the cellophane cover is flaking; both volumes are worn at the base and crown of the spine, but especially at the crown. Volume IV (2 parts, 2 volumes): these two volumes are in the best condition; the cellophane is of course loose in places; the edges are a bit worn; there is a noticeable scratch on the front wrap of IV, 2 about a quarter of the way up from the base of the front; interestingly Professor Mac Lane has made a few marks in the margins of the last essay. This is a very difficult complete set to find. Professor Mac Lane seems to have been able to acquire the volumes from the U Chicago library, though perhaps not all of them. There are some holes in some of the volumes that would indicate that notations were stapled to the front wraps. Nevertheless, the integrity of the text of all of these volumes is near perfect, and cannot be gainsaid. A fine set. Bookseller Inventory # 005725
