About this Item

Language: English . Brand New Book. Do the words: Put some wood behind the arrow , Run it up the fiagpole and see if anyone salutes or Think outside the box mean anything to you? If they do, then the chances are you have a working knowledge of, or are possibly even a fluent speaker of corporate management speak . This strange dialect spoken only behind desks and within the confines of boardrooms is bursting with gems of pure comic genius. Office Wit and Wisdom allows us all to sing from the same hymn sheet and enjoy the linguistic somersaults performed by those dark horses of comedy: your Line Managers. With a dictionary giving suitably dry definitions of american-style office speak, the book also includes definitions of common office stereotypes such as the Thruster or Whooper , translations of such job title prefixes as Executive or Senior , and highlights the pitfalls of emails and browsing the internet at work. Office Wit and Wisdom will not only amuse and entertain, but might actually help you to understand those boardroom meetings a little better. Bookseller Inventory # AA89781853755408

About this title

Synopsis:

Companies around the world have a tendency to take young, healthy individuals, suck them dry of energy and creativity, and then spit out the desiccated husks with never a backward glance. In order to survive this process, it is necessary to laugh. Office Wit & Wisdom encourages us to appreciate the funny side of office life and includes a dictionary of management-speak, with definitions of those strange phrases only ever uttered within the confines of the office; a field guide to office personalities (sadly, we all know those executives who punch the air and whoop as they hit their targets); the horrors and pitfalls of email and internet browsing at work; and a sobering analysis of office parties: years of commuting, unpaid extra hours, and working lunches rewarded by warm white wine and public humiliation by karaoke.

About the Author:

Tracey Turner has had a number of nasty incidents in offices, some of them lasting several years. The majority of her office life has been spent in the shady underworld of children's book publishing, but there have also been periods in the unglamorous hinterlands of banking, telecommunications and (most unpleasantly) waste management. She is a writer and children's books editor and lives in London. Her previous publications include Do You Come Here Often? A Failure's Guide to Flirting (Prion, Jan 2004).
