Reprint in original staple-bound printed wraps, protected in clear, removable plastic. pp659-676. Wraps very good, tanned and lightly creased with a couple of short tears. Pages fine, lightly tanned, still uncut to their top edge. US diplomat William Rockhill (1854?1914)authored the US Open Door Policy for China, and represented the US following the Boxer Rebellion. He became the first American to learn Tibetan, and is seen as the father of modern US Tibetan Studies. He was appointed Ambassador to China (1905-9) in the wake of the British Expedition to Tibet that forced Dalai Lama Thubten Gyatso into isolation. Learning that he spoke Tibetan, the Dalai Lama engaged with Rockhill, who, in 1908 made the 5 day trek to Mount Wutai on foot, to convince the Dalai Lama to seek peace with China and Britain.
