About this title

Synopsis:

Old Bear and all the nursery animals are spending a fun day painting bright pictures filled with spots, wavy lines, stripes, and more in this charming picture book featuring the author's irresistible characters.

From Booklist:

Ages 3-6. Books about Old Bear have been delighting children since 1986, and this one will enchant them, too. Old Bear has painted a picture that fits nicely into its frame. There's another, larger frame available, and each of the other stuffed animals wants to paint a picture to fit it. Old Bear suggests the animals work together, but they decline. The rabbit paints wavy stripes; the giraffe dribbles dots; Duck accidentally gets puddles on his painting. No one is very happy, but Old Bear has an idea: slices from each picture combine to make a handsome painting of a ship sailing on a rolling sea. The story is slight, but the ending makes for a nice twist. As with previous books, this is a pleasure to look at. Hissey's stuffed-animal characters, cavorting with childlike earnestness against expanses of white, are a nice mix of photographic clarity and huggability. Their situation and need, in the end, for a father figure to straighten things out will seem familiar to the intended audience. Ilene Cooper
