Both volumes with ink holograph gift inscription from Frederick William Pearce Jago to William Thomas Alexander Pattison, Dec. 22, 1877. Good. Early edition of Knight's extensively illustrated portrayal of English antiquities. "Knight supervised the writing and illustrating of Old England exceptionally closely: visits to historical localities were made 'for the purpose of superintending this pictorial and descriptive work on our antiquities' which were 'an important preparation for writing the history of England'" (Mitchell, p. 122). PROVENANCE: Frederick William Pearce Jago (1817-18??), medic and linguist, "was a scholar best known for his work The Ancient Language and the Dialect of Cornwall, originally published 1882 by Netherton and Worth of Truro. He also published a Cornish dictionary in 1887. He settled at Bodmin in 1843 where he practiced medicine" (Wiki.pedia). William Thomas Alexander Pattison (d. 1901) was an Assistant-Surgeon in the 7th Duke of Cornwall's Artillery Volunteer Corps. He is referenced in at least two works: Colburn's United Service Magazine and Naval and Military Journal, Vol. 17, Pt. II, London: Hurst and Blackett, p. 449 and the London Gazette, 10/25/1901, No. 27638, p. 6945. Mitchell, Rosemary, Picturing the Past: English History in Text and Image, 1830-1870, Oxford: Oxford University Press, 2000. Jago thanks Dr. W T A Pattison in his book, The Ancient Language and the Dialect of Cornwall: With an Enlarged Glossary of Cornish Provincial Words, Truro, 1882. Jago says Pattison was "formerly of Duporth, near St. Austell," and acknowledges that this "gentleman has rendered valuable assistance to the writer in the compilation of this glossary, and in investigations about Dolly Pentreath" (p. 327). See: Bibliotheca Cornubiensis, 1882 [includes a list of places he lived and worked, plus a list of publications (p. 1242)]. Bookseller Inventory # LV1937
