About this Item
Panoramic photochrom view of the Old Faithful Inn and Geyser at Yellowstone National Park. Photograph measures 29 ¾" x 9"; no content on verso. Published circa 1910-1915. Photo is bright, bottom right corner has a slightly jagged edge. "Haynes Photo, Printed in Germany" is printed in the bottom right corner. We are unsure as to why this photograph was printed in Germany. The Detroit Photographic Company owned the exclusive rights to the "Photochrom" process in the United States. This process was invented by a Swiss company called Fussli in the 1880s, and was licensed out to companies in Europe and the US in the 1890s. The Detroit Photographic Company with help from William Henry Jackson, popularized the photochrom process. Jackson purchased the Detroit Photographic Company in 1905. It is possible that Haynes Photo didn't have a licensing agreement with Jackson's Detroit Photographic Company at the time this was printed. A beautiful, bright image of the iconic Old Faithful Inn. F. Jay Haynes was an accomplished photographer with a long resume. Working for the Northern Pacific Railroad, he produced numerous views for promotional purposes and also developed "one of the finest inventories of the Dakota country" while working for the Black Hills Stage Company (Mautz, p. 247). He set up a studio in Fargo, Dakota Territory, travelling to Yellowstone in 1882 to help publicize the Northern Pacific Railroad. He would later operate a photographic concession in Yellowstone at Mammoth Hot Springs and was known as the Park's official photographer. ; 29 ¾" x 9". Seller Inventory # 021578
