About this Item

Edited by Jay Monaghan. Small 4to. Pictorial cloth. xv, 220pp. Numerous illustrations. Very good. Faint edgewear; paper clip stain at top of pages 182-89. A tight, attractive first edition of this volume in the "Occasional Publications of the Illinois State Historical Society" series -- and a superb presentation copy, as the front flyleaf bears a fine inscription and signature from the author: "Greetings to / Governor Adlai E. Stevenson, / Distinguished Member / of a / Distinguished Illinois Family, / In Pleasant Remembrance of a / Visit to the Historic Stevenson / Home in Bloomington, / John Drury / July 27, 1949." The houses of both of Stevenson's grandfathers are profiled in this book -- Grover Cleveland's vice president Adlai E. Stevenson I in Bloomington (p. 61) and Illinois State University founder and Abraham Lincoln friend Jesse Fell in Normal (p. 54). Governor Stevenson (1900-65) served one term in that office (1949-53), ran twice as the Democratic presidential nominee (1952, 1956) and served as fifth U.S. ambassador to the United Nations (1961-65). As governor he succeeded the gentleman whose name is printed at the foot of the title page, Dwight H. Green. A choice copy with fine associations. Bookseller Inventory # 40796
