About this Item

Dedication dated October, 1908; Title page dated 1909; no later dates. Handsome blue-on-red vignette of the Old Man to front board. NO dust jacket. Gilt titles strong to front, somewhat faded but still easily legible to spine. Book will close its own text block. Corners poking through, and some rub to edges of spine. Ownership inscription dated 1909 to FFE. Book contains what may be our favorite (irony-free) dedication: "To My Dear Uncle and Aunt / Count and Countess Wass of Czege / In Remembrance of Many Happy Days Spent in Transylvania." The character first appeared in The Royal Magazine in 1901 in a series of six "Mysteries of London." The stories were told by an unnamed lady journalist who reports the conversation of the 'man in the corner,' always found sitting at the same table in the A.B.C. teashop. For the book, twelve were rewritten in the third person, with the lady journalist now named Polly Burton. All eight B&W plates including the frontispiece are of course firmly attached where they're supposed to be (else we could hardly grade this copy so much as "good," let alone the current "very good") -- and we must say Henry Brock's line drawings are both more atmospheric and more dramatic than the better known work of Sidney Paget, implying there are dead or unconscious bodies sprawled behind every locked door in London. The book that virtually invented the "armchair detective." 340 pp. Reduced from $352. A NOTE TO OUR OVERSEAS CUSTOMERS: On Books valued over $200, we recommend (though we do not require) overseas buyers choose "Priority" shipping, as this includes some automatic insurance coverage.
