From discovery of the bay by Cabrillo in 1542, the story runs through the founding and development of the Mission and Presidio in 1770; the secularization and dismemberment of the Mission lands under California's "First Racketeers"; the American Occupation; and the colorful life of the Old Capital until the cry of "Gold!" carried its power to the north.
