Book Description New York: Hastings House, Publishers, 1971., 1971. First edition, probable second state. xix, , 236 pages. Hardcover: H 28.5cm x L 21.75cm. Predominately orange-yellow dust jacket with exterior photograph of Fredericksburg's Brompton mansion; panels rubbed, nicks and several short tears at edges, scratches and soiling to white rear panel, strong foxing most evident to dj's blank verso, top corner of front flap is price-clipped; dj now presented in a mylar Brodart protector. Dark burgundy boards with vibrant gilt stamped spine lettering, light bumping at spine ends. Light foxing to edges; toning and foxing to endpapers, foxing to several initial and rear leaves but interior pages, overall, remain quite clean. Binding is firm. A very good copy in a very good- dust jacket. With 173 b/w photographs, Bibliography, and Index. The authors review notable houses and other structures along Virginia's fall line with four chapters further subdivided by counties/cities as follows: PART ONE - NORTHERN VIRGINIA encompassing Fairfax, Alexandria, Arlington, Prince William; PART TWO - THE FREDERICKSBURG AREA; PART THREE - CAROLINE AND HANOVER COUNTIES; and PART FOUR - SOUTH OF RICHMOND encompassing Nansemond, Southampton, Dinwiddie, Brunswick, and Greensville. Hastings House issued FALL LINE in two different bindings of unknown priority; the burgundy boards of this copy versus the alternative binding of a yellow cloth spine with maroon boards (which is probably the true first state). Delmar Publishing issued an unstated second edition in yellow cloth sometime after 1976 but kept the 1971 copyright date and, most notably, altered the dust jacket layout and front panel photo.
