Engraved bookplate of Harry Worcester Smith, and bookplate of Frank T. Green who has inscribed this book to Robert E. Cowan, in pencil, dated 1939. A bicentennial history of the firm of Frederick Ellis. Contains valuable information on the eighteenth-century origins of this firm, its distinguished line of principals, the booksellers John Brindley, James Robson, Frederick Startridge Ellis, and Gilbert Ifold Ellis, all predecessors of the then current partners, J. J. Holdsworth and George Smith, who carried on the name of Ellis. Holdsworth and Smith assisted in forming a number of world-renowned book collections, including those of C.
