About this Item

At a time when new scholarship based on heretofore unaviailable archives and letters are stimulating a great wave of renewed interest in the origins of the American Republic, Kennth Roberts's perhaps greatest novel is especially relevant. Besides that, it's a great read, full of stirring battles, sprinkled with historical characters such as George Washington, conflicts and passion. One can see why he was considered America's greatest historical novelist in his heyday. The Battle of Long Island was one of the seminal encounters of the war, and Roberts brings it alive in a memorable story, historically accurate, and emotionally compelling. An unusually attractive copy, and a marvelous historical novel of the American Revolution. Sturdy blue boards, gilt lettering on spine, binding clean and tight, unmarked, with Long Island map on the boards. DJ has sliight wear at upper front corner, and a tiny piece missing from the rear at the edge. Blue/green topstained edges. Tipped in: Detailed review of the novel and bio on Roberts from Time Magazine of November 25, 1940; it describes Roberts's embrace of the Tory point of view, his devotion to factual research in writing his historical novels, and his willingness to challenge conventional wisdom. Also a printed card stating "First Trade Edition." From the estate of a collector. Bookseller Inventory # 130562
