About this title

Synopsis:

Olivier Stak aka Kosta-Théfaine discovered graffiti during a trip to London in 1987. He painted his first graff in 1988 in Paris with Colorz. From 1988 to 1994, he worked at defining his style, writing on the walls of major European cities. The founder of World Signs, a quarterly review devoted to the art of graffiti, Olivier Stak, is undeniably rooted in urban expression (tag and graffiti). In 1995 he converted his signature into a logo and began to work with a variety of materials ranging from neon lights to stickers. His work intends to be a confrontation of three worlds: fashion, advertising and art. Olivier Stak demonstrates the permeability of these milieus while attacking visual codes. His work is marked by recurring themes. He provides a social interpretation of urban elements, of esthetic codes, and of fashion tendencies (for instance, his videos showing the most important brands of sportswear or Dutch nightclubs). Olivier Stak has become a European reference in contemporary art. He has had shows in France, Italy, Slovakia and Holland. This work is the third book published by Kitchen93 and the first monograph of a fascinating artist whose works involving writing are fantastic: large blocks of colorful letters full of humor (I'm a Pleb Baby, Brilliant as Gold Teeth). It includes a selection of interventions completed between 1988 and 2004 in the city or in galleries and just as graffiti has been erased, the majority of the works presented in this book no longer exist.

About the Author:

Born in 1972, Olivier Kosta-Théfaine lives and works in Paris, France. In each of his interventions, Olivier Kosta-Théfaine plays with the codes and clichés of popular culture. He uses the languages and codes of the city and its suburbs, changing or modifying their original meaning so it can be understood by a broader public. His reflection is essentially based in rehabilitating the, often deconsidered, elements that belong to the city. His fascination for the suburbs has switched to a passion that is essential to his everyday work. The city is his muse, the drive for his artistic inspiration.
