About this title

Synopsis:

Book by Gauthier, Guy

About the Author:

Guy Gauthier was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba in 1939. After graduating from the University of Manitoba in 1963, he earned his living as a cab driver, and worked as a nude model in an art school. He went to New York in 1969 and fell in love with the city. Over twenty of his plays were performed Off-Off- Broadway, and several of them were published by Breakthrough Press and anthologized in The Scene, Volumes 1 and 3. His play, Ego Fatigue, was featured in The Scene Award Series, New York, 1979. That year, he married the love of his life, Karen Small; and in 1981, their daughter and travel partner Jennifer was born. His book of poems, North of the Temperate Zone, was published in New York in 1977. His visual poems appeared in Ed Vogelsang in West Berlin in 1982, and in NIL, visuelle literatur in K÷ln, Germany in 1989. More recently, two one act plays, F...! and Drinking at the Falls, were published by The Old Reliable Press, New York, 2011. Michael McGrinder, the editor, calls Drinking at the Falls "the most hilariously outrageous play ever performed in Off-Off-Broadway's early years." Gauthier started writing a journal in 1971. His journals have appeared in Darkness and Light, an anthology of journals, diaries and notebooks, iUniverse, Nebraska, 2000; and In Pieces, an anthology of fragmentary writing, Impassio Press, Seattle, 2006. "Nothing is more important than consciousness, nothing more strange and inexplicable," he says. "To think that we come out of nothing, that we emerge out of black emptiness, and have conscious sensations, like the taste of a cold beer, or the smell of rain in the woods, how do you explain that? It's the miracle to end all miracles. And that's what a journal is: it's the record of an individual human consciousness. It's an experience of the world as unique as a fingerprint."
