About this Item

Plan of village, 13 black and white photographic plates, 215pp, maroon cloth covered boards and spine, patchily faded dustjacket but otherwise a good copy. When a series of misfortunes stranded Jainub and her children, this young Afrikaans mother had to find the courage and determination to survive in a community where poverty was as much an integral ingredient of life as the age-old traditions and religious beliefs woven into the very fabric of an existence lived close to nature. As her story unfolds, Ummie's charm and character provide the reader with a vivid understanding of everyday life in a far-off corner of India before it was exposed to the momentous changes taking place in the surrounding mountains. About this title

Book by Kidman, Brenda

From Library Journal:

Part history, some sociology, and considerable anthropology, this pleasant, rambling account emerges from the daily life of three generations of a Muslim family in Borli Panchatan, a small village south of Bombay. The author adroitly interweaves her personal impressions (gained during visits in 1973 and 1983-84) with the villagers' oral history to provide a series of glimpses of Borli's development through the 20th century. The weather, economy, religion, marriage, etc., form the subject matter of an evocative narrative. This is a slight book, but the story gradually comes alive, leaving the reader with numerous quiet, thoughtful responses. John F. Riddick, Central Michigan Univ. Lib., Mt. Pleasant
