About this Item

2 volumes. xvi, 825p, [8]; xxiv, 765p, [7], [1]. Contemporary vellum over boards. Edited by Stephan Bergler (c1680-1746) and first printed in 1707. Sandys III p3 writes that Bergler was extremely competent in Greek and among things assisted Johann Albert Fabricius with his Bibliotheca Graeca. Hoffmann II p464-465. From the Library of the noted scholar and founder of the Philomathean Society at University of Pennsylvania, Christian Frederic Cruse (1794-1865) with his signature in volume 2. The signature in volume 1 has been neatly cut out. Cruse was born in Philadelphia and entered the University of Pennsylvania in 1812. He was one of thirteen founding members of the Philomathean Society, the universities first student organization established in the fall of the following year. He became an Episcopal Priest in 1822, but would later return to the University as Associate Professor in 1831. Vellum torn on the lower half of the front hinge, but board is holding firm. Some general dusting otherwise a nice copy with an unusual and scarce provenance. Bookseller Inventory # 6657
