About this Item

[38], 411p, [43]. Engraved title page and one foldout map.18th Century burgundy French morocco with gilt ruled boards and a richly gilt spine in compartments. Yellow morocco title label on the spine, marbleized end papers and a gilt foredge. The first issue with the two passages printed in red. One of the most celebrated productions by the Elzevier Press as a masterpiece of neat compact printing. It was edited by Daniel Heinsius (1580-1655). It is dedicated to his son Nicholaus. Dibdin II p547p.Willems #450; Copinger #4545; Schweiger 1169. De Bure #2684 describes in detail how to distinguish the real true edition from the counterfeit. Very small chip at the foredge of the title page not affecting the frontispiece. Contemporary ink stain at the top blank edge of frontispiece which has lead to very small chip as well. The 18th century binder trimmed the margins a bit close at the top edge and shaved a few headings, but with no impact on the text block. Small contemporary ownership rubber stamp on the inside front blank with the phrase "Teres atqve Rotvndvs'.This is truly a very well preserved and attractive example of French 18th century bookbinding.
