About this Item

Italian operatic tenor and conductor Tito Schipa (1888-1965) has signed in Italian this 5 7/8" x 4 1/8" photograph of himself in a tuxedo, top hat in his right hand, his left hand in his pocket. The date on the photo appears to be 1936. Schipa's stage repertoire, which in his early career included a wide range of Verdi and Puccini roles, eventually was limited to about twenty popular Italian and French operatic roles. In concert, Schipa performed an array of lyrical operatic arias and songs. He made numerous audio recordings of arias and songs, and his recordings included a famous 78 RPM set of Donizetti's Don Pasquale made in 1932 which is still in circulation on CD. Condition: Slight smudge to a couple of letters otherwise very good condition. Bookseller Inventory # A00358
