About this Item

Fabrizi, Paolo. Opération heureuse de rhinoplastie, d'après la méthode italienne. . . . Offprint from Gaz. des hôpitaux (1841). 8vo. 16pp. 2 plates (1 fold.). [Paris] Imprimerie de Béthune et Plon (colop.), [1841]. 214 x 139 mm. Original wrappers (front wrapper lacking), a little creased & spotted. Scattered foxing, minor soiling, but very good. From the library of noted French surgeon Auguste Nélaton (1807-73), with the characteristic note "Mélanges" in colored pencil (erased but visible) on the first page. First Separate Edition in French, originally published in a very rare Maltese edition in the same year; this French offprint is even scarcer, with only one copy (Blocker) noted in OCLC. The author, Fabrizi, was a surgeon at Malta's Ospizio degli Invalidi; Zeis notes that he "used the Italian method [of rhinoplasty], but with the difference that he took the skin from the forearm near the elbow." The French translation of Fabrizi's work omits the history of rhinoplasty included in the Maltese original. Gnudi and Webster mention Fabrizi as being one of several Italian surgeons who, by performing plastic repairs to noses, lips and eyelids, contributed to the 19th-century revival of plastic surgery. This copy was owned by Auguste Nélaton, whose Elémens de pathologie chirurgicale (1844-59; G-M 5597) includes chapters on plastic operations; see Zeis 605. Zeis 780. Blocker, p. 131.
