Synopsis: It is known that the most current simplifying hypothesis about the problems of the Foundation Mechanics considers the soil as a perfectly elastic, homogenous and isotropic means. On the basis of this schematization, it is possible to establish a specific value of the critical height of the gravity centre for each very tall building so that, for any external perturbation, even minor, the overturning of the building may occur either due to an instantaneous deformation (short-term instability) or due to a delayed deformation, that is a slow and continuous rotation of the building (long-term instability). The collapse of the building, however, as a consequence of the progressive increase of the gravity centre eccentricity, may also occur due to the crushing of its material, or to the breaking of the soil, as well as to the concurrence of two of these phenomena or even to all phenomena, including overturning. The tower of Pisa is subject to the mechanism of long-term instability. The theoretical results obtained so far have added very little to our knowledge of the instability of the tower, of which rotation is estimated to be about 5°30’; moreover, no radical action to prevent its collapse has yet been taken. Author therefore proposes a new approach to the old problem. It consists of the laying of a sub-foundation with suitable characteristics for ensuring the tower stability, giving it – if it is necessary – the perfect verticality either keeping or attenuating the present inclination.
